20 everyday acts of kindness anyone can do

Posted on 19 March 2018

Make someone’s day with an unexpected act of kindness

It was Princess Diana who said,

Carry out a random act of kindness, with no expectation of reward, safe in the knowledge that one day someone might do the same for you

Wouldn’t it be lovely if we could all do that? Nothing big, just a small show of kindness every now and then.

To get you started, we’ve put together a list of really simple things that anyone can do to spread a bit of happiness:

  1. Give someone a compliment
  2. Let someone go in front of you in a queue
  3. Give up your seat on the bus or train for another passenger
  4. Cook someone their favourite meal
  5. Donate your old towels or blankets to an animal shelter
  6. Visit someone who may be lonely
  7. Feed the birds
  8. Sign up to give blood
  9. Clean the communal fridge or microwave at work
  10. Buy a hot drink or some food for a homeless person
  11. Donate something to a charity shop
  12. Send a thank you email to a friend or colleague
  13. Help an elderly person with their shopping
  14. Bring in some treats for your colleagues
  15. Hold the door open for someone
  16. Undertake a litter pick in your area
  17. Give someone a bunch of flowers from your garden
  18. Put your loose change in a charity box
  19. Pick up the phone instead of sending a text
  20. Smile at everyone, just because…

This list is just the tip of the kindness iceberg. You can probably think of plenty more. Let us know about the kind acts that have brightened your day, or how you’ve made a difference to someone with a simple show of kindness. And let’s all keep up the good work by committing to doing something unexpectedly kind every day.
