Professional dancer Earth G tells us why you’re never too old to throw some shapes and his favourite place on the planet to do so.
Meet Earth G
Right from the start, Earth G makes it very clear that he doesn’t let anything hold him back in life, not least his age.
After a lifetime of professional dancing, acting and singing on stage with top acts, we asked him how he feels about life after 50 and why life is too wonderful to slow down.
Who are you?
My name is Earth G. I’m an actor, singer and dancer.
How old are you?
I don’t do age… so you’re not gonna find that out!
Ha! How old do you feel then?
I am still a teenager! (laughs) At the moment anyway. I’m doing the same moves I used to do when I was a little boy and would stand around and dance.
What inspired you to start dancing?
I came from dance. Every time I get an opportunity to express myself I really, really enjoy it, ya know? Especially dancing. I’m in a different world when I’m dancing and have good music.
What do you say to people who say ‘you’re too old to do that’?
You’re a joker! (laughs) It doesn’t matter who you are, or where you are… when you hear good music, it touches your soul. If it’s not dancing, it’s enjoying the music for what it is. It always does something to me. Music is so important, it brings people together.
It’s got nothing to do with age! Anyway, age is just a number. People see me doing my thing and they say ‘well you’re too old for that, aren’t you?’ and I wanna slap them and say ‘get up and do something yourself’, ya know? They might experience some inspiration if they just don’t think about age, because it’s gonna hold you back.
I think we need to get rid of that and allow people to live and express themselves and encourage people to be creative. To go out and do wonderful things themselves.
What’s the best thing about getting older?
You often hear people say ‘if I knew then what I know now I would do things differently’ but you wouldn’t. I think it’s more the fact that you have so much more experience and you get wiser and you’re not stressed out about silly things you used to get miserable about in the past. For me personally, it’s about having a greater understanding and accepting yourself, and because you’re more accepting of yourself, you’re more accepting of other people and their faults.
What would you tell your younger self?
It’s important that people be independent! We are conditioned to be so dependent on what people say, what they think, what they tell us to do and so on. I think it’s very important to make your own mind up and be happy within yourself. And do the things you love to do!
Have you talked about your funeral?
Yes. I told my wife to cremate me and then she should plant a Papa Meilland rose because I love roses. It’s the most beautiful rose with the most delightful scent and it’s very strong and dark and red. I’ve put it in my Will that she should plant it wherever they decide to put the ashes. I want a lot of funk and happy music and I want people to enjoy themselves, have fun and remember me as a happy, joyful person who lives on. I’ll definitely be bopping with everybody — I’ll be throwing down some moves! (laughs) Life is infinite and dying is just a pause in the whole process.
