Steve started surfing at the age of 9. Now, over 50 years later, he’s still searching for the perfect wave.
63 year old Steve Outram is addicted to surfing. Whether he’s surfing the shores of California, the Mediterranean or his home beach in Devon, he says that surfing ‘makes you feel good’ and it’s that feeling that keeps Steve heading out to surf two to three times a day.
At the age of nine, Steve began surfing when he went on holiday to Cornwall with his parents. He says that he loved being in the ocean, and when you pair that with the thrill of riding a wave, he really was hooked.
Now over 50 years later, Steve says that surfing ‘keeps you young’. When you get out on the water it makes you feel like you’re still doing something. ‘You paddle out and forget everything because you’re so centred on what you’re doing’ adds Steve, ‘it just gets rid of all tension’.
Steve has collected some funny nicknames from fellow surfers and friends over the years. Steve tells us that the nickname ‘Crazy Steve’ comes from the fact that he is still surfing at the age of 63, and in particular that he insists on heading out into the cold British waters without a wetsuit on. He says, ‘I start going out without a wetsuit on in April when the sea is still quite cold. I like the freedom you get with not wearing one and I like to feel the water’.
Incredibly, only four years ago Steve thought he might not ever walk again, let alone surf. He prolapsed a disc in his back and wasn’t able to walk. After successful surgery and two years of rehabilitation, Steve still has a partially paralysed foot, but hasn’t let that stop him, ‘it’s made me appreciate every day’ he says.
‘When you’re younger, you just think “oh I’ll do something later” and you put it off and put it off. But as you get older, you think right I’m gonna go and do that.’
Steve’s talents extend past surfing; he even makes his own surfboards. ‘I started making my own boards because you can make exactly what you want. Making a board and then riding the wave is such a thrill’.
Steve says that surfing has no limits – it’s for anyone. You can go out on small waves or use a bigger board if that’s what you want to do. It’s not that expensive and over anything, it makes you feel good.
