We learnt to jive at 50

Meet loved-up Tracey and Lui who show us that team work makes the dream work, after they discovered a new found confidence with dancing.

Tracey always watched Strictly Come Dancing when she was younger and loved all things dancing. Now at 51, twirling in crystal-lined costumes has become a reality for herself and her husband Lui who is 56. After four short years of dancing, they’ve racked up an impressive number of trophy wins and have danced in Ireland, at Disneyland Paris and all over the UK including the number one ballroom dancing destination – and the home to Strictly Come Dancing – the Blackpool Tower Ballroom.

Now that their four kids are grown up and flown the nest, Tracey and Lui wanted a hobby that they could do together. They could’ve easily done their own thing, with Lui taking up golf and Tracey finding a hobby of her own. But they wanted something to do together and dancing has changed their life for the better. ‘Being fifty, you need to start looking after yourself’ Lui says, and so the search for a hobby that would keep them active started. After giving swimming ago, their friend invited them to go along to their first ever dance class.

At first, ‘it was like rocket science’ Lui tells us. ‘We used to do it once a week’ Tracey said, ‘and we just gradually progressed’ Lui added. They credit dancing not only with getting fitter and losing weight, but with the amount of routines that they need to remember, their memory is improving with each dance and their mental health is benefiting.

Lui tells us how their dancing has been received, being a builder and usually playing football with the lads, you might think his workmates and friends might have something to say about the dancing in rhinestones and spandex. Well, they were not only supportive, but many took so much of an interest that they gave it a go themselves! ‘It is nerve wrecking’ though, Lui says, as it’s the man’s job to lead the lady and he’s got to get things right, though ‘you learn that the lady is always right in dancing’ he adds, smiling.

Age is about how you feel, it’s not about how you look on the outside.

Dancing has become a total escape for both Tracey and Lui. Now completely involved in the dancing community, which is one of the nicest parts of their newfound hobby they tell us, their social life is busier than ever and they’re always attending different dances or events. Everyone in the community is happy to lend a hand, to offer a spare pair of dancing shoes if you forget your own. They meet people of all ages, and Lui says that sometimes it’s nice to surprise people on the dance floor and show that ‘we’re not old, we can keep up with you lot’.

When we asked them what their greatest achievement is in life, Lui replied, ‘our family is the cake and dancing is the icing on the top’.
