SunLife launches new straightfordable home insurance

Home insurance without the fuss

  • Buildings and contents cover with straightforward cover choices
  • Customers only pay for what they need, making cover more affordable

SunLife is strengthening its move into the general insurance market with the launch of its first ever home insurance product.

SunLife, which launched pet insurance - its first ever general insurance product - earlier this month has now developed a home insurance offering which allows customers to choose the product to meet their individual needs and budget. “Whether that’s a customer who knows they need £23,250 to cover his household contents, or someone who is unsure of their rebuilding cost and can rest assured that £1 million buildings cover will meet their needs, we’re making it straightforward and affordable – straightfordable,” explains Simon Stanney, who joined as General Insurance Director in July to head up SunLife’s emerging general insurance distribution business.

“For instance, how often have you begun a buildings insurance application only to be asked how much the ‘rebuild cost’ of your home is?” Simon adds. “It’s not something most people know or can easily find out – and an example of how some insurers are not thinking enough about their customers. We’re doing things differently by cutting out questions like that, and making it easier for customers to get the cover they want, without paying for features they don’t need.”

“This is another example of SunLife’s drive to make financial services simpler and more accessible for everyone," says SunLife managing director Dean Lamble. “We want to make it as easy as possible for people to get the cover they want, whatever the product, with a ‘retail-like’ experience that means they can feel good about their financial future.”

The products cover major perils for both the home and its contents, while the full accidental proposition offers a higher and broader level of buildings and contents cover, giving customers even more protection.

What’s more, customers can choose from a combined buildings and contents, including accidental damage and a choice of additional covers for personal belongings or Home Emergency cover, while someone in rented accommodation can opt for contents cover only.

SunLife is working with a panel of insurers who can provide an expert service to customers, with each playing to their own strengths; highly trained sales agents will carefully explain the cover benefits to each customer.

“Many of our customers prefer to speak to a real person here in the UK to ensure that they have the cover they need,” explains Simon. “Houses are often peoples’ greatest financial asset so it's important they fully understand what they are buying and have an opportunity to ask questions.”

SunLife’s research has shown that often, people do not know what cover they require or what cover they have, and some are also unsure of what their possessions are worth. To combat this, SunLife has introduced umbrella levels of cover for both building and contents to ensure that people are not underinsured. Customers are also free to readjust their cover during their policy term if needed.

Simon concludes: “Our customers are asking for great value home insurance and that is exactly what we are offering.”
