Bernie's a DJ at the age of 63 and says this is the most exciting time of his life. Welcome to life after 50.
"You can't put a price on how you feel when you're standing up here and you've got the whole room in the palm of your hand," says 63 year old DJ, Bernie. As he surveys his packed dance floor, illuminated by a glittering disco ball, you can tell just how much he loves doing this.
With an extensive record collection, everyone used to tell Bernie he should be a DJ, but he never really had the confidence to do it. Then when he hit 50, he thought why not? So armed with a selection of 60s and 70s music, he started spinning his first tunes.
Now he's doing that every Friday and Saturday night and says: "I'm just having so much fun. I'd do this every day of the week if I could".
Bernie thinks he's found his niche: "Tribute bands and karaoke, that's all that's out there for the over 50s. And then this old bloke turns up with all his records and everyone wants to dance until the early hours. With a little laugh Bernie says: "In the end I have to switch the equipment off and tell everyone to go home!”
Being in control of the decks obviously gives Bernie a kick – and it must keep him fit too. He doesn't have a roadie, so has to lug all of his equipment in and out of the car himself. But he seems to do it effortlessly commenting: "I don't have to do what I'm doing. I do it because I love doing it".
As Bernie expertly drops the needle onto the next 7" single, he says: "What I'm doing now is the most exciting part of my life. I just live for the weekends – and it's just like having my own private party every Friday and Saturday night.
Bernie's a great inspiration for getting older and says age is no barrier to doing what you want to do – you just need the enthusiasm to do it. Searching through his record box he says: "I'm so glad this came into my life. I'm alive and feel like I'm running on adrenalin".
