Our accessibility policy

We want to make sure that every person accessing our website finds it easy to use. Here you’ll discover how we make this happen.

What is accessibility?

At SunLife, we’re committed to making our customers’ lives easier. That’s why we made sure our website is simple and easy to access for everyone.

Language and design

Internet Crystal Mark awarded by the Plain English Campaign

Our website has been awarded the Internet Crystal Mark by the Plain English Campaign. It's a seal of excellence for websites that reach high standards of accessibility through clear language and design. The accreditation offers proof that SunLife has done everything possible to make our site easy to understand for customers.

Our accessibility standards

We follow the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0 from the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C). These guidelines set out how to make web content more accessible to internet users, especially those with disabilities.

Additional code – known as WAI-ARIA landmark roles – has been used in the build of this website. Put simply, this code helps to increase the accessibility of web pages by describing the role of dynamic web page elements, such as forms and expandable menus, in greater detail. This extra information is particularly useful for describing web page content to visitors using screen readers or other assistive technology.

Our approach to design

To ensure we offer you the best experience when viewing our website, we've created a site that's adaptable to all types of technology. So whether you’re sat at your desktop computer, browsing on your tablet or out and about using your mobile phone, the layout will adapt to any device.

To further support assistive technology – such as screen reading equipment – we have used Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). This technique separates styling information from content, allowing the text to be read more easily.

Relative font sizes have been used wherever possible, which enables you to change the text size in their web browser.

Navigation has been kept simple and consistent throughout the site, with the help of consumer test groups to provide feedback on website usability.

Our approach to links

All links on this website also contain additional information, which describe the link in greater detail. This can be viewed by hovering a mouse (or other pointing device) over the link text.

Our approach to images

Where there are images on a web page, alternative text (or 'alt text') has been used to describe the image and its purpose. This can be read by screen readers.

Our approach to pop-up windows

The use of pop-up windows on this site has been kept to a minimum. If a link opens a new browser window, this is explained in the title of the link.

Our approach to documents

The documents which are available to download on this website are Portable Document Format (PDF). If a link opens a PDF on this website, this is explained in the title of the link.

How to adjust your browser

You can adjust your browser to suit you.

If you have a computer mouse with a scroll wheel, press and hold the Ctrl key and move the scroll wheel up and down to zoom in and out.

To make adjustments using the keyboard, press and hold the Ctrl key and press either the plus (+) or minus (-) keys on the top of the keyboard.

For more information on changing the text size, colour and fonts in your browser, the BBC Accessibility Help web page has lots of useful information and guides.

Digital Skills Hub

We’ve created a Digital Skills Hub – a collection of useful videos and guides – to help you feel more confident when using computers, phones, and other technology.

Understanding technology is a vital skill in today’s world, but we know that not everyone has the same knowledge and abilities.

SunLife is committed to helping everyone improve their digital skills, so that you can feel confident and safe accessing our website on your devices – as well as enjoying everything else that technology has to offer.
